Implant overdenture
A denture that
snaps in
and stays put.
Two to four implants, a set of attachments, and a denture that clicks down onto them. It still comes out for cleaning — but it no longer moves while you are talking.
Why people come here
- Surgery and the finished teeth done by one dentist, under one roof
- Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists
- Fellow of the Misch Institute — and faculty at its successor
- A written, itemized plan before anything is scheduled
What changes
The lower denture problem, solved.
Upper dentures hold reasonably well because they have a palate to seal against. Lower dentures have a horseshoe of bone, a tongue pushing from the inside and cheeks pushing from the outside, and they float. Adhesive is a workaround, not a solution.
Two implants in the front of the lower jaw change the whole experience. The denture clicks onto locator attachments, stops lifting at the back, and stays where you put it. Four implants give more stability again and let the denture be made smaller.
What stays the same
It still comes out at night for cleaning, and it still rests partly on the gum, so some tissue support remains. If you want something that never comes out, that is a fixed arch.
Side by side
Overdenture or fixed arch.
| Implant overdenture | Fixed full arch | |
|---|---|---|
| Implants per arch | 2–4 | 4–6 |
| Removable | Yes — out at night | No — stays in |
| Covers the palate | Often partly, upper arch | No |
| Relative cost | The most affordable implant option | Higher |
| Cleaning | Out of the mouth, like a denture | In place, with a water flosser |
| Chewing force | Much improved over a denture | Closest to natural teeth |
Practical notes
Things worth knowing up front.
The attachments wear
Locator inserts are consumable, like brake pads. They are replaced in a few minutes at a routine visit, usually every year or two.
Relines still happen
The ridge under the denture continues to change slowly. A reline every few years keeps the fit honest.
It can be a stage
Some patients start with two implants and a snap-in denture and convert to a fixed arch later. Planned properly, the first implants are not wasted.
Questions
Overdentures, answered.
Can I use my existing denture?
Sometimes. If the denture fits well, the teeth are not worn out and the base is sound, it can often be adapted to take the attachments. If it is old or ill-fitting, adapting it is false economy.
How soon can I wear it?
The denture is usually adjusted and worn soft-lined during healing, then connected to the attachments once the implants have integrated — commonly around three months.
Does the upper still cover the roof of my mouth?
With four implants an upper overdenture can often be opened up at the palate, which makes an enormous difference to taste and temperature. With two it usually cannot.
Start with an exam and a straight answer.
A consultation includes an examination, 3D imaging and a written, itemized plan. If implants are not the right treatment for you, Dr. Patellis will say so and tell you what is.
